Analysis and design improvement of centrifugal vapour compressor

Objective: Improve the performance characteristics of a centrifugal compressor by modifying the design of Volute, exhaust diffuser, impeller and other components.

Challenges: CFD model creation and simulation of vapour compressor with downstream components.

Details: The design of various components are modified and studied to improve the existing design. Major parameters of interest are mass flow rate, pressure ratio and efficiency. It was found that highest pressure loss occured in volute which was reduced by design modification, followed by design improvement in the exhaust diffuser in the downstream of volute. Design improvement was carried out based on 1D principles and removal of obstruction at the mount of exhaust diffuser. Other design modification was also considered to improve the existing design.

Results: The efficiency of existing design was increased by ~4%
